Bristol-Somerset Coalfield Map

For a description of the geology of the Chew Valley see Gareth Thomas' article on page 20 of the December 2012 Chew Valley Gazette.

The British Geological Survey provided a report to DECC on coalbed methane which includes the following graphic of the Bristol-Somerset coal field. The report states that the relinquishment report of the previous license holder reccomended two exploration bore holes, one to be drilled 1.5 km east of Hinton Blewett and the other 1 km east of Chew Manga - so between Chew and Stanton Drew - as marked on the map. UK Methane's application is at Hicks Gate, marked as a yellow dot.

THE UNCONVENTIONAL HYDROCARBON RESOURCES OF BRITAIN’S ONSHORE BASINS - COALBED METHANE (CBM)

Taking the intersection of the entire coalfield and the license areas we can find which communities might be impacted by coalbed methane development.

These maps are derived from Ordnance Survey Open Data (Meridian 2 and MiniScale data) and the PEDL license areas and the coal field provided by DECC.
