The purpose of this blog is to provide information to residents in North East Somerset, and in particular the Chew Valley, about the prospect of shale gas and coalbed methane exploration and development in their communities.
Shale gas and coalbed methane are both types of unconventional gas which can be extracted from shale and coal by hydraulic fracturing - aka fracking. This is a contentious subject and there is a complete spectrum of views about it. There is also a huge amount of mis-information fed to us through the media about fracking, global warming and climate change. Much of the mis-information is deliberately orchestrated.
Most people are worried about global warming and climate change but we are an energy hungry society in an energy hungry world. Reconciling the two is not easy. Our energy policy needs to add up and we can't all be NIMBYs (Not In My Back Yard) and say we don't want nuclear, wind turbines, tidal barrages, coal and fracking for unconventional gas - and meet our climate change commitments. What we need is a sensible and informed debate, nationally and locally, based on the best available information rather than dogma or wishful thinking. We need to find local and national energy policies which add up.
The purpose of this blog is to try to:
Other sites such as:
Phil Romford
Frack Free Somerset
give more technical details about fracking and concerns about the methods employed.

- provide some practical information about which villages are within areas licenced for fracking and within the coalfield
